Optimization of a content streaming platform’s feed page
Feed Page on TopBuzz mobile application
Product Type: Mobile design
Role: UI/UX Designer, 2017 – 2018
Background
Feed page is the first page users access to after they login on TopBuzz platform. It’s where users spend most time browsing information and interact with this app. TopBuzz uses data sources combined with machine learning technology to aggregate news and recommend specific content to relative users. Before redesigning, the main feed page contained a lot of product problems reported by our users, research team and also product owners.
Browsing and viewing experience research
To improve platform retention rate and attract more new users, we looked into what factors affect the time they spent on Feed Page and the urge to read more content.
Design approach
Approach 1: Emphasizing Channels & enabling editing function
Approach 2: Content visual weight adjustment
1. Red colour conflicts with primary yellow colour and causes strong visual noise .
2. Irrelevant wording & info on the main feed page, such as “Top Stories”.
3. Content tiles lack of visual hierarchy.
Approach 3: Expanding image thumbnail area to improve user stickiness
Approach 4: Optimization of UI components
Wrap things up
After final design, I exported detailed specifications for FE to implement, which includes detailed dimension, layout & grid setup, end to end view etc.
